What Is Cultivating? A Reflection After Watching Nezha

“What’s cultivating? They mentioned it a lot in the movie,” my friend asked.

Well, I found it difficult to explain 修仙(XiuXian), a uniquely Chinese concept, to him. Through cultivating, a mortal, – whether human or animal – can become a god and attain immortality while still alive. Yes, 修仙 promises eternal life in one’s current life, rather than life after death, and there is no such concept in the Western culture.

One advantage of being bilingual is that you can see a broader world, both physically and spiritually.
